Introducing our concept for the refurbishment of the Wandering Cask, a distinctive pub redevelopment project with a rich heritage. Drawing deep inspiration from the Portuguese wine trade, Dutch architectural forms, and timeless pub traditions, this transformation blends global influence with local character. warm timber textures, and vibrant tiles echo port cellars and canal houses, while classic pub features ensure a familiar, welcoming atmosphere. The result is a bold yet authentic space that tells a unique, layered story.
The exterior design blends heritage with bold identity. A rich dark green façade anchors the building, inspired by traditional pubs and the Portuguese wine trade. The standout feature is a custom 3D brass globe sign, it references maritime trade and global connection. Brass detailing continues through signage and door hardware. Together, these elements create a striking, story-driven presence that draws people in.
The main restaurant area is a celebration of Portuguese artistry and elegance. Classic hand-painted tiles, traditionally used on walls, are reimagined here—set into ceiling coffers and softly lit to create a warm, unexpected focal point above. This overhead detail adds depth and cultural texture to the space. The walls continue the narrative with bespoke artwork designed to resemble traditional Portuguese tile motifs, offering a layered, immersive atmosphere that blends heritage with contemporary pub dining
The bedrooms are designed as a subtle tribute to Portuguese captains’ quarters, offering a refined and restful escape. Walls feature classic panel beading throughout, enhancing a sense of structure and elegance. A two-tone paint scheme—with a lighter upper half and a deeper, moodier lower half—adds warmth and visual interest. Brass fixtures, timber accents, and soft textiles complete the look, evoking a maritime charm that’s understated yet characterful, blending historical inspiration with modern comfort and calm.
