The Great Western (Trenarren Wing)
Newquay, Cornwall
The Great Western is the oldest purpose-built hotel in Newquay, Cornwall. Located in a prominent position overlooking Great Western Beach, the original building was designed by the Cornish architect Silvanus Trevail and first opened in April 1879. In 1931, the hotel was enlarged and remodelled in a contemporary Art Deco style, whilst retaining much of the original building.
This latest investment focused on the Trenarren Wing of the hotel; improving its position as a quality & consistent all year-round hotel facility. The Great Western has been an iconic part of Newquay for over a century and as it continues to thrive as part of the vibrant community, the proposed interior concept looks to further strengthen the marriage between the hotel and this unique location.
A backdrop of seaside nostalgia pioneered by the Great Western Railways’ – “Cornish Riviera Express” in the early 1900’s, has been introduced within the artwork, Bric-a-brac furniture upholstery and colour scheme, re-connecting the hotels name with the customer experience.
Taking a slightly different angle on the local surfing culture, historic influences led to the surfboard and specifically, its manufacture. This has been explored through the use of cork on the headboards and seagrass inspired wallpaper, both materials utilised in early surfboards.
Almost synonymous with Newquay and its surfing culture, The Iconic campervan could not be ignored. A quiet familiarity is offered through the Linoleum desktop surface and a classic check pattern bed throw, inspired by the original vehicles upholstery. The tactile relationship with these materials aims to bring a sense of ‘campervan’ fun into the guest experience.
With the favourable position of the building offering so may views toward the coast, the natural light and colours play a leading roll in the enjoyment of the Great Western Hotel. Dressing the windows offered the opportunity to further animate this relationship. The use of fabric patterns reminiscent of the sea beyond, combined with rug designs seemingly reflecting the waves, creates a threshold where the natural wonders of Newquay are drawn in to each bedroom.
