The Round Coppice
Whiteley, Fareham
Nestled within the vibrant Whiteley Shopping Centre development, The Round Coppice is a contemporary hospitality space deeply rooted in the identity of its landscape. The pub owes its name to one of the three historic Whiteley Copses—specifically, a 16-acre expanse of ancient woodland now designated as a Site of Importance for Nature Conservation (SINC).
We were keen to bridge the gap between the modern development, established in 2013, and the site’s rich agricultural past. Once a tapestry of working farmlands and managed coppices, the surrounding environment has long been defined by its relationship with timber and firewood production.
To honour this heritage, we seamlessly integrated historical narratives into the venue’s interior fabric. We designed and commissioned bespoke bar joinery that serves as a direct architectural nod to the region’s traditional timber management.
The custom-designed carpets and curated artwork further develop this connection, taking inspiration from the 300-plus trees planted across Whiteley’s open spaces to link the indoor experience with the surrounding flora.
Central to our design concept is the story of the “nimble, fleet-footed” Roe deer known to hide within the local trees—a creature so central to the area’s identity that it features prominently on the Whiteley Town Council emblem. We subtly embedded motifs of this native wildlife throughout the interior scheme, inviting guests to discover these hidden layers of local history.
The outcome is an authentic, multi-layered environment where history meets modern hospitality. By translating raw geographical history into refined interior details, we have created a compelling destination that celebrates its roots while providing a warm, sophisticated retreat for the contemporary visitor.
